Springtime is here, and in DC, that means it’s cherry blossom season. The cherry blossom trees, which showcase beautiful blooms of pink and white, stay colorful until mid-April. Along with this springtime transformation comes a wide range of great activities to accompany this seasonal eye candy.
We encourage you to check out Sonnet’s list of both traditional, and not so traditional, activities to partake in for this year’s bloom.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival is an annual favorite. The festival takes place along DC’s Tidal Basin from March 20th – April 14th. You can take the Metro 20 minutes south to the festival from Sonnet’s nearest stop. We’ve found several tips to help get you the most out of your experience:
● Arrive early – go on a weekday if you can, and arrive early in the day to avoid the crowds.
● Bring water – stay hydrated while you enjoy the festival.
● Prepare for the weather – don’t be afraid to visit the festival on an overcast day!
Just make sure to layer up. You can take some beautiful photos of the cherry blossoms in a new perspective with overcast weather. Plus, you’re in for a less crowded and more quiet experience.
Celebrate the start of the season at the Cherry Blossom PUB, just a 15-minute walk away from Sonnet apartments. This pop-up bar has returned for its third consecutive year, running from February 28 – April 21st.
This year, the 2019 edition features a room designed like a bowl of ramen, with sculptures of noodles, chopsticks and actual ramen from Ramen by UZU served. On top of the delicious food, there’s also a garden room, inspired by the Palace of Versailles’ Fontaine de L’Encelade in France. The expansive drink menu offers unique concoctions, such as the Honeydew, Honey See (sake, vermouth, fermented sake syrup, cucumber, honeydew, absinthe), as well as the Once and Floral (gin, peach, lemon, orange flower water, egg white, matcha). Cheers!
Try something different by exploring digital art, which allows you to experience Springtime and the iconic cherry blossom season in a much more unique way.
ARTECHOUSE has introduced a new exhibition, celebrating the beautiful cherry blossom season through a digital lens. The In Peak Bloom exhibit runs from March 20th – May 27th, 2019 and is just a 12-minute drive away from Sonnet. Even after the cherry blossoms have bloomed, you can explore the beauty of the symbolic trees well into late May at this exhibit.
Created by women artists and female-led art collectives, using a variety of different interactive mediums, the exhibit celebrates Spring, renewal and the cherry blossoms through an immersive and interactive digital art experience.
Discover and explore, as you animate the environment of the digital cherry blossom garden using an augmented reality mobile app. This fresh perspective of the cherry blossoms brings their symbolism to life in both an innovative and creative way, digitizing the modern concepts for the 21st century, while also paying homage to traditional cultural themes.
